Having been a visitor to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for several years, I made the
move to the Keweenaw Peninsula, an awesome
'island' that juts out into the magnificent body of water called Gitche-Gumee
(or Lake Superior), ten years ago and find myself firmly
planted in the great little town of Mohawk. We are located about 7 miles
north of Calumet - right on US 41.
After renting for six months, to make sure I liked the area as well after
spending a winter up here, I set out to buy property. Having as my
criteria the need to be within walking distance from my three yooper
grandkids and to have a place where I could do my own writing and
photography, I was pleased when this spot came open.
The
gallery was a beauty shop and I thought "income now - gallery later". However
that is not what God had in mind and when the beauty shop went under the gallery
became a reality much quicker than planned. And the retail shop was just a
catalyst to another phase of God's plan. Two years after the retail shop opened, it
closed and the shop became full time home the non-profit agency, Keweenaw
Krayons, serving youth and adults of the area (along
with visitors). Until October of 2004 (when Keweenaw Krayons moved to
the Mohawk School), it was filled with after school and pre-school programs
as well as intergenerational art classes, gardens and so much more..
In fact it became so full there was no room to do the necessary paperwork that
comes with grant writing and reporting, fundraising, etc. And I was ready
to live "off site". So I moved, and the "House that is Green"
(to
distinguish it from our great "greenhouse" where plants grow) became office and
gallery and a place for "Artist(s) in Residence" to live and create.
Now I've come full circle and, with the Keweenaw Krayons move, I once again live in the "House that is Green". If
you are an artist and looking for a place to immerse yourself in the life of the
Keweenaw and are open to sharing this great old home with other artists (and
non-artists), as well as a dog and two cats, let me know
and I'll put your name on my waiting list.

artist, but looking for a unique vacation experience - this is the place!!!

I am currently working on writing the story of Ramblin' Rose
and Keweenaw Krayons - a story of a miracle. I will probably put portions
of it on this site from time to time.
